all talk, no substance

woof woof woof.

i’ve recently stumbled upon something i found most peculiar.  it almost seems like we reward those who talk and talk and talk, with little to back up and show for it.  why?  we don’t see them all the time, we can’t know if they follow through or not.  say it straight, look them in the eye and spin a truth; people think you’re a real straight shooter, someone who gets things done.

it’s interesting, since i feel as though we all grow up a bit more worried.  don’t talk big; if you don’t back it up, you’ll get… embarrassed, or beaten up, or … sodomized. you know how it is!  but lately, i don’t know if that was just my own personal upbringing or a general function of society.  it seems weird.

the benefits of talking big and not necessarily backing it up just seem to run far and wide.  go into an interview?  shoot your head off about the things you’ve done, brag to others about the plans you’ve got, tell the world about all of your conquests and exploits.

i’ve always liked to abide by “say less, do more”.  it’s good, it works.  but others who talk big, and do at least some seem to be grabbing more attention in spades, climbing ladders quicker, and does it honestly matter if you follow through?  with the advent of the ‘net and social media, the majority of people have the attention span of flies.  a new clock cycle, a new passing interest, and we’ll likely forget about your old old claims.  so why not?  let’s all shoot our mouths off.
